In September of 2016, the patent for moissanite gemstone production ended, and My Moissanite Inc. became the first moissanite producer in Canada. The trademarked brand, Harro Gem, was created to provide choices in a marketplace where innovation and options were previously limited to only one company.
The name "Harro" was derived by the contraction of the words hearts & arrows. We started our line of moissanite gemstones by improving the round brilliant with a hearts & arrows cut, creating better symmetry and a more diamond-like appearance. Since then, the hearts & arrows has been the basis of many of our cuts, such as the oval, cushion, and square radiant.
Why do hearts & arrows matter? In short, it forces the stone-cutter to pay attention to how the facets on the top of the stone line up with the facets on the bottom of the stone. This not only makes for a more brilliant stone, but ensures consistency in the cutting process. Think of it as an extra layer of quality control that other moissanite manufacturers don't have to worry about.
Moissanite has a Mohs hardness of 9.25, which makes it the second hardest mineral next to diamond. It has superior dispersion, luster, and fire than diamond, but not so much that it doesn't resemble one. In fact, moissanite looks so much like diamond that many jewelers could not tell them apart, especially in the days when moissanite was not so well-known. Even the diamond testing instrument used by jewelers cannot tell moissanite apart from diamond because the thermal conductivities of the two materials are so similar.
The refractive index of moissanite is 10% greater than diamond. It measures the material's ability to bend light; the more the light bends, the higher the chance light going into the stone ends up bouncing back out (as opposed to light going through the stone). This is what makes gemstones sparkle.
The dispersion measure to what degree a material is able to split up white light into its different colors. The dispersion of moissanite is more than twice that of diamond. Dispersion doesn't affect how much a stone sparkles, but rather the different colors of light that gets reflected back for your eyes to see (referred to as fire). Visually, the amount of fire exhibited by diamond and moissanite is close enough that your eye can't really detect much difference.
Although moissanite looks very similar to diamond, it should not be viewed as a fake diamond. In reality it is much rarer than diamond and has superior optical properties. Other types of colorless gemstones may look similar to moissanite, but compromises will be made in terms of brilliance, fire, or durability.
Although moissanite can only be found in meteorites, advances in technology has allowed us to scientifically re-created this space crystal for all to enjoy.
Harro Gem is a premium moissanite made from silicon carbide (4H crystalline polytype version), the same material as the Forever One by Charles & Colvard. However, not all moissanite is created equal. Just like diamonds have the 4 C's, moissanite can also vary in color, clarity, cut, and carat; Harro Gem has one more C up its sleeve: Choice. Colourless moissanite typically comes in common shapes, such as round, square, cushion, and oval. Just for the round cut alone, Harro Gem has a variety of different cuts, such as the Hearts & Arrows, Belgium cut, 100 Facet Starburst, Old European Cut, Jubilee Cut, and Rose Cut. The cushion can be made in a pillow cut (rectangular), Jubilee cushion cut, Hearts & Arrows, or Old Mine Cut. You can even order a cushion and oval with either a brilliant cut or a crushed ice cut.
If there is a shape that we don't have in stock, we can custom cut a moissanite stone just for you. Are you looking for a pair of colorless trapezoid side stones to go with your 5 carat emerald Harro Gem centre stone? Do you need an 8.25mm Old European Cut to fit an antique ring, while every other moissanite provider is either cutting an 8mm or an 8.5mm? Maybe you found the perfect stone somewhere else but have been on their wait list for over a month with no indication as to when you will receive the stone. Whatever the case may be, we will have the perfect solution to meet all your unique gemstone needs. That's the beauty of choice!
Harro Gem is also an over-achiever in color, cut, and clarity as well. We have searched the world looking for the whitest and clearest moissanite rough manufacturer, and we found them. Then we hired a team of highly skilled stone cutters who know how to turn moissanite rough into beautiful works of art.
The clarity of our moissanite is second to none. The fewer inclusions a stone has, the better the light can dance around inside the stone and back to your eyes. All of our moissanite has a clarity rating between VVS1 and VVS2, just shy of a flawless rating. That means that even under 10 times magnification, you will be hard-pressed to find any flaws inside the stone.
